Anna Fedorova2024-11-27 If you're struggling with the Portuguese residency process or with getting the dreaded AIMA appointment, there is no one better and more trustworthy in the entirety of Portugal than Marcus! Throughout the whole process, he was always available and supported us with every tiny detail, saving me I don't know how many hours of work and research. His services are absolutely invaluable, but also really reasonably priced - which isn't the case with many lawyers. Understand the pathDiscover the pathway to Portuguese residency for British citizens and other foreigners through the Digital Nomad (D8) visa. Explore the eligibility criteria, application for residence and tax benefits of NHRs.
To apply for a residence visa in Portugal, you need a valid passport, proof of sufficient financial means, health insurance, and a clean criminal record. Specific requirements vary depending on the type of visa, such as work, remote work, passive income, study, or family reunification.
Family accompaniment or family reunification requires documents proving familial relationships (e.g., marriage or birth certificates legalized with the Apostille of The Hague), valid passports for all family members, proof of accommodation in Portugal, evidence of sufficient financial means, and health insurance.
You must submit your visa application through VFS Global or the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence, typically using the E-visa platform. The process may vary by country; for instance, in the UK and the USA, applications are submitted personally at the VFS Global office.
The duration depends on the country where the visa is requested and the appointment date with AIMA in Portugal. Legally, residence visa processing takes up to 60 days, while residence permit issuance can take up to 90 days after the interview. Starting the process at least four months before your planned move is recommended.
Costs include processing fees that vary based on the type of permit, as well as additional expenses for document translation, certifications, health insurance, and professional assistance if required. Currently, the residence visa fee is €90 and the residence permit fee is €184, except for PALOPS and Brazil.
Yes, you can apply for Portuguese citizenship after legally residing in Portugal for at least five years, provided you meet specific criteria, including basic proficiency in the Portuguese language.
Portugal offers the investment-based residency program called the Golden Visa, which allows residency through investments in national funds, job creation, and other means. Real estate investments are no longer eligible. You can also setup a business and apply for a residence visa (D2) for entrepreneurs.
Speaking Portuguese is not mandatory to obtain a visa or residence permit. Even without speaking Portuguese, you can live comfortably in Portugal, one of the most English-friendly countries in the world, ranked 6th in the EF English Proficiency Index among 116 countries. However, learning Portuguese can improve cultural integration, broaden opportunities, and enable you to apply for Portuguese citizenship.
Relocating to Portugal may change your tax residency status, subjecting you to Portuguese tax laws. Previously, the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax scheme provided benefits for new residents, but it was discontinued in 2024. Currently, the Tax Incentive Program for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI) is available, although its beneficiaries are more limited. Portugal remains an attractive destination for cryptoasset holders, offering favorable tax treatment for cryptocurrency income.
Job opportunities in Portugal can be explored through online job portals, recruitment agencies, and professional networking. Focusing on high-demand sectors and learning Portuguese can significantly enhance your prospects. Independent professionals can start activities without prior residency, and the same applies to those looking to invest or establish a company in Portugal.
