Final extension to 15 October 2025 and new AIMA online renewal portal

Final Extension Until 15 October 2025

The Government is granting one final extension, keeping permits valid only until 15 October 2025 in order to preserve legal certainty for residents. To stay fully compliant, you must submit a renewal request β€” either in person or via the forthcoming AIMA I.P. digital portal. Once you file, you'll receive a six-month renewal certificate confirming your lawful stay until the new card is issued.

Do you hold a Portuguese residence permit expiring on or before 30 June 2025? This guide explains the 2025 residence-permit renewal rules, key deadlines, required documents, and how the AIMA system streamlines the process. Processing of all applications kicks off on 1 July 2025 through AIMA's dedicated mission task force.

How to Renew

In Person

For biometric data collection. Served by AIMA's Mission Structure. Required when biometric data is not yet on file or needs updating.

Online Portal

For applicants with valid biometric data and a valid passport. AIMA I.P. will launch a new online portal for this purpose.

Applicants will submit a renewal request either in person or through the new online portal that AIMA I.P. will launch. Once the request is filed, you will receive a renewal certificate confirming your lawful status in Portugal for six months, covering the time until the new card is issued.

AIMA Mission Task Force

Leveraging Existing AIMA Capacity

The temporary "mission structure" within AIMA I.P. will be used to handle this renewal wave.

Processing Timetable

Case processing begins on 1 July 2025, ensuring a pipeline is in place well before the 15 October deadline.

The Government wants to complete this work by December 2025. The issuance of new cards is expected to be faster than AIMA's current pace, as first-time residence permits require more detailed analysis.

6-Month Renewal Certificate

Once the request is filed, you will receive a renewal certificate confirming your lawful status in Portugal for six months, covering the time until the new card is issued.

Service Consolidation

AIMA Takes Full Control

After this renewal wave, the renewal work will be fully concentrated within AIMA. The objective is to stop sharing the service with the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN). The IRN began handling renewals after AIMA's creation, but over time, IRN offices started implementing their own renewal rules.
